Death toll in accident rises to five

Death toll in the road accident near Kulathur in the district rose to five on Friday night as one more victim died in the hospital.

A saltpan worker, Chandrasekaran (34) of Anna Nagar Colony in Kulathur, was taking home on a two-wheeler his children Muthupriya (12), Anushiya (11) and Ajit (7) and one Marisamy’s daughter Selva Latha (15) and Muthumanickam’s son Madhesh (5), also from the same area, from school on Friday evening.

A sand-laden lorry hit the bike, killing Chandrasekaran, Muthupriya, Ajit and Madhesh on the spot.

Anushiya and Selva Latha were admitted to Tuticorin Medical College Hospital, where Anushiya succumbed to her injuries on Friday night. The condition of Selva Latha is said to be “critical”.
