Dalits from Appiapalayam village, near Avinashi, staged a sit-in protest on Collectorate premises on Monday stating that no action has been taken on their petitions for the last two years seeking drinking water supply.
They said they have been to the Collectorate to meet officials nine times in the last two years for the purpose.
“About 200 Dalit families living in the area are not getting drinking water properly. Each time we raised the matter with the district administration, and the panchayat, water will be provided for a few days,” said A.P.R. Moorthi, one of the petitioners.
They said that the water was supplied once in three days, and that too just 10 pots.
“ “How can 200 families survive with 10 pots of water,” he asked.
This has forced them to buy water at Rs. 5 a pot, which was not viable for the agriculture labourers. He said that water supply was proper in nearby villages where upper castes resided. Senior revenue officials promised to resolve the matter in the next few days.
