The husband of Dalit cook P. Pappal, who works at the noon noon meal centre attached to the Government High School at Thirumalaigoundanpalayam in Tirupur district, has sought police protection over concerns about his family’s security.

C. Palanisamy, 42, submitted a petition to District Collector K.S. Palanisamy during the Grievance Day programme held at the collectorate on Monday.

In his petition, Mr. Palanisamy alleged that a person from their village visited their residence on August 2 and threatened to foist a false case on his family.

Mr. Palanisamy said his relative Venkittan was also present during the incident.

In view of the threat, he sought protection for his family and that of Mr. Venkittan. The Collector assured the family of protection and asked Superintendent of Police A. Kayalvizhi to take action.

Ms. Pappal’s transfer to the Thirumalaigoundanpalayam High School from Ochampalayam was opposed by caste Hindus. They staged a protest in front of the school from July 16 to 18, following which block development officer V. Meenakshi transferred Ms. Pappal to the Ochampalayam School.

Following opposition from various Dalit outfits and political parties, Tirupur Sub-Collector J. Sravan Kumar revoked the transfer order. Taking cognisance of it, the Nation Commission for Scheduled Caste ordered sought an action taken report on July 30.
