Customs official held on bribery charge

The official had demanded Rs. 50,000 for clearing a scrap consignment

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday evening arrested a Customs official on charges of taking a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a scrap merchant here.

According to sources in the agency, Shankar Shanan, the scrap merchant, lodged a complaint with the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch that Murali Krishnan, Customs Authorised Officer in the Special Economic Zone in Sholinganallur, had demanded Rs. 50,000 for clearing a scrap consignment.

A special team formed to investigate the complaint laid a trap and arrested the official soon after he took the bribe money.

A search on his residence in Velachery revealed Rs. 15 lakh cash and some documents, the sources said.

In another case, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Monday arrested a Deputy Commercial Tax Officer on charges of taking bribe.

DVAC sources said Azhagar Raju, a businessman residing in Anna Nagar East, lodged a complaint that the DCTO Gabriel had demanded Rs. 4,000 bribe for processing his application for allotment of VAT number.

After registering a case, a special team laid a trap and arrested Gabriel in his office on Greams Road after he took the bribe.
