About 160 students from 12 schools and 11 colleges participated in the dance competition conducted on the theme, ‘How do schools and colleges prevent diabetes and obesity?’ in commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2014 celebrations organised by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism of the Christian Medical College here on Saturday.

Among schools, the Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vellore, won the first prize, St. Mary’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School the second prize and B.M.D. Jain School the third prize.

Among colleges, G.G.R. College of Engineering bagged the first prize, Scudder Memorial College of Nursing the second prize and Sri Venkateswara Polytechnic College the third prize.

Dr. Anand Job, Professor and Head of ENT, Unit-1, CMC, who was the chief guest advised the children to understand and exercise control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasized the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits.

Dr. Thomas V. Paul, Professor and Acting Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Unit-2, CMC, said that ‘Together for Diabetes’ was the theme of World Diabetes Day 2014. The celebrations provide a unique platform to in0crease awareness on the risk factors of diabetes, its manifestations and complications among the general population as well as professionals from all spheres of life. The celebrations are also aimed at shaping the young generation into realising the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle and strategies to encourage them to prevent diabetes.

The other activities conducted by the department in connection with World Diabetes Day 2014 starting from October 2014 to March 2015 included a cookery competition, nursing quiz, medi quiz, teachers’ quiz, essay writing competitions in Tamil and English, painting competition, exhibition, poster competition, and a teachers’ training programme on diabetes prevention and management.
