A large number of cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged a demonstration in the town on Monday demanding the creation of a new taluk with Komarapalayam as headquarters and to press other demands.

They said that the ruling AIADMK promised the creation of new Komarapalayam taluk during the 2011 Assembly elections.

The agitation was organised by the Namakkal west district unit of the party. K. S. Moorthy, west district secretary of the party, led the agitation, in which S. Gandhiselvan, former Union Minister and secretary of the East district unit of the party, and others participated.

The DMK party men also protested against the 60 per cent hike in water charges effected by the Komarapalayam Municipality. The municipality was collecting only Rs. 81 per month as water charges and hiked the same to Rs. 135 per month. This steep hike affected the poor and the downtrodden, they said.

They also protested against the absence of women doctors at the Komarapalayam Government Hospital. Due to the non-availability of women doctors, people belonging to weaker sections had to go to the private hospitals for delivery and other complicated issues, they said.

The cadre also urged the Government to set up the common effluent treatment plant in Komarapalayam as announced by the Chief Minister under Rule 110 in the Assembly. Mr. Gandhilsevan said party would present a petition to the District Collector seeking action against P. R. Sundaram, AIADMK MP, for his speech inciting violence. The party would move the court if the Collector did not initiate action, he said.
