Court rejects suspended DSP’s plea

A Kumbakonam court on Friday rejected a plea by suspended DSP Khader Basha, charged with selling confiscated ancient idols, seeking first-class facilities in the Central Prisons, Tiruchi.

The idol wing police on Friday presented Khader Basha in the case pertaining to illegal disposal of six bronze icons seized from a smuggler at Ooranipuram village in Virudhunagar district in 2008, before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court hearing idol theft cases here.

An idol smuggler Arockiaraj had tipped off Inspector General of Police A.G. Pon Manickavel that Khader Basha, who was Inspector then, and Special Sub Inspector Subburaj, who was Head Constable then, had allegedly illegally dealt with the six bronze icons that they recovered from him. Subsequently, the DSP and the SSI went underground. They were later arrested.

The magistrate posted the next hearing to October 12 and directed that the accused officials be held in judicial custody till then. The magistrate also dismissed the appeal by Khader Basha to provide him with first class facilities in the Central Prisons, Tiruchi.
