The Madras High Court has issued notices to the R K Nagar MLA-cum- Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Election Commission officials on a petition filed by a candidate whose nominations for the by-election to the constituency was rejected. T. Suresh submitted that though he had fulfilled all norms prescribed under the Representation of the People Act, the Returning Officer of the constituency, where the by-poll was held on June 27, rejected his nomination on the ground that the address of one of the proposers was wrongly mentioned in the voter identity card. However, this proposer was allowed to vote.

The petitioner contended that rejection of his nomination was illegal and prayed to set aside Jayalalithaa’s election from the constituency.

Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, who heard the petition, ordered notices to Jayalalithaa, the Election Commission, State Chief Electoral Officer and Returning Officer.

Meanwhile, another election petition with a similar prayer filed by social activist ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy was adjourned by three weeks.
