The City Municipal Corporation’s failure to clean drains, which results in frequent water logging in many residential areas during rains, was questioned by the councillors during the council meeting held here on Wednesday.
Councillors cutting across party lines said that most of the drains remained clogged and the areas along the drains have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Mayor S. Soundappan asked the officials to take immediate steps to clean the drains.
DMK councillor and opposition leader in the house M. Bhuvaneswari alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programmes in the city.
She said that the government had sanctioned Rs. 8.85 crore for construction of 1,008 houses and Rs. 90 lakh for providing drinking water facilities.
But no works were carried so far, she alleged.
Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj said that there are 16 primary health care centres in the city and each centre is conducting three medical camps every month free of cost. He urged the people to make use of the camps.
Stating that corruption was prevalent in the Corporation, DMK councillors staged a walkout.
