As the northeast monsoon is likely to start in the district during the third week of October, Tirunelveli Corporation has started multipronged anti-dengue operations within the city limits by mobilising its sanitary workers and officials to carry out cleaning operations and awareness programmes in vulnerable areas.

Since dengue outbreak had triggered panic in the district in the past after it claimed several lives, the corporation has geared up to meet any eventuality.

After holding a meeting on Monday to review the precautionary measures taken by the officials of the urban civic body to combat possible dengue outbreak during the monsoon, Mayor E. Bhuvaneshwari started distribution of ‘nilavembu kudineer’ at Tirunelveli Junction bus stand on Tuesday.

When dengue outbreak was reported in the district a couple of years ago and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital was flooded with dengue patients from various parts of southern districts, the students of Government Siddha Medical College here distributed ‘nilavembu kudineer’ to the public and the patients, thus providing much-needed relief to them and instilling confidence in the minds of the people that the fever could easily be cured provided the right line of treatment was started in time.

Apart from continuing the distribution of ‘nilavembu kudineer’ at the college every day, they also distributed the concoction to the people coming to the Collectorate.

Since the concoction helped contain dengue attack, Ms. Bhuvaneswari made arrangements for distributing ‘nilavembu kudineer’ in schools.

The corporation has now started this exercise.

“As this concoction provides great relief to patients suffering from any type of fever, we’ve started distributing it to the public as part of our awareness programme. Since the herbal compound is sold at affordable cost in the pharmacy on Siddha Medical College premises, the public could easily get it,” said Ms. Bhuvaneshwari, who along with a couple of councillors distributed the concoction to the passengers travelling on city buses.

She also said that conservancy workers had been instructed to clear stagnant water and discarded containers as they would provide a potential breeding ground for mosquito.
