Cop murder: four held, one surrenders

The police have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of Special Branch constable Jagadish Durai near Vijayanarayanam on Monday last.

They said that Krishnan (50) and Murugaperumal (20) of Thamaraikulam and Manikumar (24) and Raja Ravi (25) of Kalmanickapuram were arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of Jagadish Durai, who was beaten to death when he tried to stop and arrest illicit sand miners.

After being produced in a Nanguneri court, the four were remanded in judicial custody. The hunt is on to nab Murugan, the kingpin of the gang that murdered the constable.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Amitabh Bachan of Thamaraikulam surrendered before a judicial magistrate court here on Thursday. He was later remanded in judicial custody.
