Cooperative societies racing against time to fulfil production target

October 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - ERODE:

Power loom Weavers' Cooperative Societies are racing against time to comply with the deadline for production of saris and dhotis meant for free distribution for Pongal festival to below poverty line families.

The list of beneficiaries have already been readied and the 104 Societies in the Western region spread over Erode, Namakkal, Tirupur and Coimbatore districts were given time until November to complete production.

But, with only a few days left, representatives of the Societies are believed to have made a representation to the State Minister for Handlooms and Textiles Gokula Indira asking for more time.

At a recent meeting to take stock of the situation, the Minister said the freebies have to be despatched to other districts in time in order to ensure that all the beneficiaries received the dhotis and saris well in time before Pongal festival.
