A construction worker was crushed to death and another worker suffered a fracture when a portion of the house under construction collapsed at Chinna Kadai area here on Thursday.

Five construction workers were removing the centring, when the pillar supporting the front elevation portion of the house collapsed, Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police said.

The police said two workers who were removing the centring got caught under the debris after the pillar collapsed. One of them died on the spot, while another worker suffered fracture in his right hand, they said.

District Fire Officer K. Murali, who led an 11-member fire service unit to the spot, said the fire service personnel rescued the injured worker and removed the body of the other worker after an hour-long operation.

Three other workers escaped unhurt as they were standing on the ground floor area, the police said. The deceased worker was identified as Iqbal alias Muniasamy (26) from Kulasekarakal near Devipattinam, the police said.

The injured, P. Sekar (30), was admitted to the Government District Headquarters Hospital here. Kenikarai police registered a case against S. Azar Ahmed (29) who was building the house.
