Demanding that wages should be paid to them every month, conservancy workers of 21 wards that are being maintained by a private company picketed the Corporation office here on Tuesday.
There are 60 wards in the Corporation limits of which solid waste management is maintained by the Corporation in 39 wards while the private company maintains 21 wards.
In the 21 wards, the actual conservancy workforce is 865, but only 430 workers are currently employed.
The workers said that salary was not paid to them regularly as there was one month delay. Also, if a worker took leave on Friday, salary was deducted for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
As per the norms, they should be paid Rs. 246 as wages per day, but were paid only Rs. 150, they said.
The workers said that their sole income for the family was lost as the company failed to pay the salary even after a month.
“Earlier, salary was paid on 20{+t}{+h}of every month, but now they pay it after a delay of 35 or 40 days,” they added.
Gadgets
The workers also said that gadgets were also not provided to them while involving in solid waste collection and many had suffered injuries. They demanded regular salary and protection at work place.
They met Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj who assured them to look into the issue. Later, the workers numbering over 150 left the premises.
