The Congress High Command on Friday said that its ties with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam remained strong. The statement came in the wake of media reports that relations were strained as a result of the inclusion of Kanimozhi, daughter of Chief Minister and party president M. Karunandhi, as an accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
“[The Congress' relationship with the DMK] is very good, very strong and it will continue,” said All India Congress Committee General-Secretary and party in-charge in Tamil Nadu Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi refused to react on the issue, saying it did not make sense for a political party to give a running commentary on an ongoing probe.
Responding to a question, sources from Tamil Nadu Congress Committee said party president K.V. Thangkabalu did not receive any direction from the Congress High Command asking him to meet Mr. Karunanidhi and explain to him that neither the party nor the UPA-II government had anything to do with the inclusion of Ms. Kanimozhi in the case.
The TNCC president met Mr. Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai on Friday morning even as Ms. Kanimozhi appeared before the Special CBI court here.
“We have not given any instruction. Mr. Thangkabalu [would have met Mr. Karunanidhi of his own initiative],” said a senior party leader. When asked about the meeting, Mr. Thangkabalu said it was only a courtesy call and he had sought for an appointment with the Chief Minister two days back.
