Congress ready for polls, says Elangovan

May 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - TIRUPUR:

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E. V. K. S. Elangovan told The Hindu that the State unit of the party had not given any thought about alliances in the coming Assembly elections at this juncture and it would be left to the party high command to decide on the issue.

“The high command will take the decision whether to have alliances or should go alone in the polls once the elections are announced. We are prepared for elections at any time,” he said on the sidelines of an INTUC conference here on Sunday.

He expressed surprise over the BJP’s sudden ‘U-turn’ in the attitude against AIADMK. “Till two weeks back, the BJP has been criticising the governance of AIADMK. But in the past few days, they have softened the stance which is a clear indicator that they wanted to forge an alliance with the AIADMK in the next Assembly elections,” he said.

On the acquittal of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, he sounded optimistic that Karnataka government would go for an appeal in the Supreme Court against the judgment. “Appeal in the apex court has to be made considering that there was mathematical errors and underestimation of wealth in the assessments that led to the verdict,” he added.
