The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri reached out to Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan and urged him to consider joining the Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu for the Lok Sabha election.

Mr. Alagiri made this plea to Mr. Haasan while speaking to reporters after meeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday.

Speaking to the reporters, Mr. Alagiri said: “Secular parties are there in the DMK-Congress alliance. We feel that people like Kamal Haasan should be with us. He has been identifying himself as a secular person and with a Leftist orientation. It is our wish that he should join us.”

While Mr. Haasan has been strongly critical of the AIADMK, the actor-turned-politician has said that he would not have any truck with the DMK as well. He said that although he would like to win all seats in Tamil Nadu, he was concerned about keeping his hands clean.

Mr. Haasan, who has criticised the Dravidian parties for corruption when in power in the State, is likely to go it alone in the Lok Sabha election.

Speaking to The Hindu recently in Coimbatore, Mr. Haasan said, “We have taken a plunge into politics to serve only good things to the people. Hence, we are careful not to indulge in a hasty handshake and get our hands stained”.
