The SC, ST wing of the Congress party in Kanyakumari staged an agitation in front of the Collectorate on Tuesday protesting against the Central government’s move to scrap the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), the flagship scheme of the former UPA government.
Presiding over the agitation, district secretary S. Sundararaj of SC, ST wing of the Congress party alleged that the NDA government is diluting the scheme introduced by the Congress government in 625 districts across the nation.
The UPA government had allocated Rs. 33,000-crore for the scheme in the 2014-15 budget. Till September 2014, the government should have disbursed Rs. 17,000 crore, but the actual disbursal stood at only Rs. 12,000 crore, Mr. Sundarraj alleged.
