Congress party members on Friday staged a demonstration condemning the City Corporation for not re-laying roads dug up for laying underground drainage pipes.
Several roads had been rendered unusable by motorists and pedestrians alike, they said, and also complained that sanitation had been neglected in all the wards.
Open drainages had caused apprehensions about outbreak of epidemics, the speakers said, and cited foul smell emanating from overflowing septic tanks at slum board settlements in B.P. Agraharam and Poompuhar Nagar.
Slackness on the part of the Corporation in implementing the Rajiv Awaz Yojana was condemnable. The protestors also demanded immediate construction of new houses in the place of demolished ones at the slum board settlements in Alagarasan Nagar, Periyar Nagar, and Pudhumai Colony. The protest was led by the party’s urban unit president E.P. Ravi.
