No doubt plastic is a menace. While there is cheer among solid waste management experts about Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to ban all plastic carry bags irrespective of thickness, there is still confusion about how it will be implemented.
Kaushik Mukherjee, Chief Secretary, told The Hindu that the modalities regarding the issue are yet to be worked out.
“Mr. Siddaramaiah has directed Health Minister U.T. Khader to look into how the ban can be implemented.
“The Minister is likely to soon chair a meeting with Health Department officials, besides coordinating with the Law Department to work out the modalities,” he said.
On Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that a decision had been taken to ban plastic carry bags.
Currently, BBMP is responsible for implementing the ban on plastic carry bags that are less than 40 microns in thickness.
Experts point out that plastic carry bags are a major component of the dry waste generated in the city.
Meanwhile, BBMP officials admitted that it was unclear about how the ban could be implemented.
Legislation
One said, “The ban on plastic that is less than 40 microns in thickness is being implemented since 2011. We do not know if the State will bring in legislation to implement the new ban.”
