Collector submits status report on Dharmapuri incidents

An Inspector and a Sub-Inspector of Police have been placed under suspension and charges framed against the RDO, Dharmapuri, in connection with the mob fury in Dharmapuri district on November 7.

Trouble started after the father of a caste Hindu girl, who married a Dalit boy, committed suicide.

In a status report filed before the First Bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, in response to a writ petition seeking a CBI investigation into the incident, Dharmapuri District Collector R. Lilly stated that V. Jaganathan, Inspector of Police, Karimangalam, and M. Perumal, Sub-Inspector, Krishnapuram, had been placed under suspension since November 13.

DSP, Dharmapuri, M. Gobi, had been transferred as DSP, DCRB, Krishnagiri. Disciplinary charges had been framed against P. Subramani, RDO, V. Mani, Tahsildar, and Vijayan, VAO, Vellalapatti.

The Collector detailed rehabilitation measures taken to instill confidence in Dalit colonies. Steps were being taken to safeguard the interest and safety of Dalits from any further communal violence. Intelligence personnel were closely watching the happenings. The entire district machinery was engaged in relief works in Natham colony, Annanagar and Kondampatty.

Superintendent of Police, Dharmapuri district, Asra Garg, said that in all 142 persons had been arrested.
