The District Collector, K.S. Kandasamy reviewed the construction progress of a road overbridge coming up in Tiruvannamalai.

The inauguration for the work was taken up on February 2 this year, by the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Sevoor S. Ramachandran. The bridge would replace a railway level crossing on Puducherry-Krishnagiri Road between Tiruvannamalai-Thandurai railway stations, and another level. It is estimated to cost ₹30.38 crore.

Commuters in this section have been awaiting the construction of this bridge for a long time. This is one way to reach the Tiruvannamalai from Tindivanam, and with the closure of the road, people have been forced to take a detour to reach the town by manoeuvring through smaller roads.

The bridge will be very useful for pilgrims, who throng in large numbers on a daily basis.

On both sides of the bridge, there would be 15m approach roads, and a 7m-wide service road with a stormwater drain and a footpath, according to Highways department officials.

The length of the bridge will be 666 metres and the time allotted for the construction is 24 months, they said.

Another bridge near Polur will be 648 metres long and will be constructed in 18 months, officials said. It is estimated to cost ₹17.37 crore
