Virudhunagar Collector V. Rajaram literally caught the dengue virus on Tuesday during a surprise check in a house in Rajapalayam.
During an inspection carried out to weed out mosquito breeding sources, he went into a house on Seethakathi Street in ward 11. The woman in the house told him that everything was clean and there were no mosquitoes in her house.
The Collector opened the tray used to collect water that came out of the refrigerator. “She had kept the house clean but did not take care of the refrigerator. I showed her how she is breeding the virus right in her house and only then she realised the mistake,” he said. The water in the tray was flushed out.
S. Srinivasan, State Nodal Officer, National Rural Health Mission (Child Wing), who is camping here, said people should only go to government hospitals for treatment of fever.
“I found that fever patients are coming to the GH very late after consulting private hospitals. Abuse of IV fluids has been noticed and people should bear in mind that heavy dose of IV fluid will affect heart functioning,” Dr. Srinivasan cautioned.
With regard to medicines, he said if people tried to go for self-medication/over-the-counter purchase in medical shops or if they consulted compounders, the chances of platelet count coming down were high.
