Collector bans private unit from drawing water for commercial use

The Communist Party of India’s protest against a private distilleries unit, which had sunk deep borewells near Kodumudiyar dam for drawing water for commercial purposes, has finally succeeded as Collector M. Karunakaran has banned the manufacturing unit from continuing its production.

In a statement, Dr. Karunakaran on Monday said members of Tamil Nadu Vivasaayigal Sangam submitted a petition against the deep bore wells being sunk by Romana Distillery Private Limited for drawing water for commercial purposes. The petitioners had alleged that farming operations around Valliyoor and drinking water supply to a few hundred villages would be affected if the mineral water manufacturing unit was allowed to function.

Subsequently, Sub-Collector, Cheranmahadevi, V. Vishnu, who was asked to submit a report on this issue, inspected the site and the adjoining areas. He was satisfied with the farmers’ apprehension that farming operations in this region would be seriously affected, especially in Nadukkampaarai tank and Padalaiyar channel, if water was drawn through deep borewells for commercial purposes.

“Hence, considering the welfare of the farmers and the public in this region, Romana Distilleries Private Limited has been prohibited from drawing water through deep borewells or open wells,” Dr. Karunakaran said.
