The Department of Endocrinology, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore is hosting the 11th annual meet of the Indian Society of Bone and Mineral Research on November 27 and 28.

Topics

The meet would cover various topics such as osteoporosis and its treatment, vitamin D deficiency, sclerotic bone disorder, parathyroid disease, post transplant bone disease, diabetes associated bone disease and thyroid bone disease.

The annual meet will be preceded by a pre-conference continuing medical education for post graduate teaching on November 26. As many as 45 national and international experts in the field of metabolic bone disorders and 300 delegates are participating in the event.

Doctors said the medical aspects of bone diseases are a neglected area. It is a misconception that when bones ache or if there are fractures, the solution is a surgical one. However, by and large, intervention is preventive.

It is the domain of an endocrinologist to diagnose and treat medical conditions of bone diseases with medications.

Metabolic bone disorders are high in prevalence but it is not being dealt extensively in the standard MBBS curriculum, doctors said, calling for more attention on the conditions.

For instance, osteoporosis affects nearly 40 per cent of women above 60 years in the country.

This means that almost 15 per cent of the population is prone to fractures before the age of 65, which in many cases is preventable through adequate diagnosis and early treatment of osteoporosis, doctors said.

The annual meet will consist of symposia, orations, meet the professor sessions, quiz, poster and platform presentations.

The conference is for general physicians, endocrinologists, nutritionists, rheumatologists, orthopaedicians and paediatricians.
