CM lying about integrated water scheme: Alagiri

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri on Monday charged that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami was lying to the electorate of Nanguneri that the Tamirabharani-Nambiaru-Karumeniaru integrated water scheme would be completed by 2020 and said that it was the AIADMK that had stalled the project initiated by the DMK in 2009.

In a statement, Mr. Alagiri said the DMK had allocated ₹369 crore for the project in the 2009 budget and had in fact secured land for the project, contrary to Mr. Palaniswami’s claims. Mr. Alagiri said till 2011, half the project had been completed by the DMK-led government but was then stalled after the late Jayalalithaa returned to power in 2011.

He referred to the courts taking a strong view of the stalled project under the AIADMK regime. The Congress leader said it was amusing that the Chief Minister, who was making allegations about land acquisition, was unaware that the DMK government had acquired 694 hectares of land in Tirunelveli district and 106 hectares of land in Thoothukudi district for the project.

“There cannot be any other careless statement made by a Chief Minister who says work on projects already completed has not been undertaken at all,” Mr. Alagiri charged and questioned the AIADMK on the steps taken by it in the last eight years to implement the project.

“Can Mr. Palaniswami deny that Jayalalithaa stalled the project because of political vendetta? There cannot be any denial that the government is in a situation to implement the project only because of a contempt case against it in the High Court,” he said.
