The flyover, announced by late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa during the Collectors’ conference in 2012-13, would come up at a cost of ₹ 54.07 crore. Mr. Palaniswami said the new flyover would ease vehicular congestion at the junction where Madurai-Theni road and Madurai-Dindigul bypass road cut across. Besides, the waiting time at the junction for all vehicles would come down drastically, he added.
The four-lane flyover would be constructed on Madurai-Dindigul Bypass Road in 15 months.
The Chief Minister also said the State government had ordered a re-survey for the bridge already proposed to decongest traffic at Goripalayam junction. “We have asked (officials) to expedite the survey for the bridge aimed at decongesting traffic with a minimum acquisition of land,” he said.
A flyover would be constructed on Thondi Road-Sivaganga Road junction at a cost of ₹ 56 crore. Besides, the northern bank road along Vaigai river connecting Kuruvikkaran Salai Bridge and PTR Bridge in Anna Nagar would be constructed at a cost of ₹ 16.3 crore.
Mr. Palaniswami said that the government had already announced construction of sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the city to prevent pollution caused by mixing of sewage water into the Vaigai. Only clean water from the STPs would be led into the river, he said.
A road along the Vaigai for use as a service road parallel to the road overbridge at Sellur to connect Kulamangalam Road would be laid a cost of ₹ 3 crore.
