Ahead of the monsoon, the corporation has begun cleaning of major drains in each zone here on Wednesday.

Due to dumping plastic materials and waste materials in the drains, major drains get choked resulting in over-flowing. The situation is worse during rainy seasons as sewage water enter houses due to water logging. Despite warnings, residents and traders continue to dump the waste regularly in the drains. Hence to face the monsoon and prevent water logging, the corporation has begun cleaning drains from Wednesday.

Work has begun in Kondalampatti zone with cleaning works carried out in Rajavaikal and Maruthi Lodge drains. Officials said that drains will be cleaned in Chinnaiyan Colony, Kurinji Nagar, Maniyanoor housing board area, Andipatti housing board area, Panjandangi drain, coffee bar drain, Ketukadu and Karungalpatti drains.

Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer K.R. Selvaraj said that these drains will be cleaned at a cost of Rs. 6 lakh and work in other zones will also begin soon. He requested the people not to dump plastic materials and waste materials in the drains and use the dustbins in their area. Residents in many areas wanted cleaning works to be carried out regularly so that stagnation of sewage water does not result in sanitation issue.
