October 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

The district administration has decided to take up regular mass cleaning exercises in Kancheepuram during this monsoon to ensure source reduction of mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti that causes dengue.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by District Collector R. Gajalakshmi here on Thursday with officials from Revenue and Health Departments and the District Rural Development Authority.

A drive to create awareness among schoolchildren of the need to prevent freshwater stagnation will be launched by distributing pamphlets on October 16. The children would be involved in mass cleaning of their school premises.

The mass cleaning drive would also be conducted at all government buildings and office premises throughout the district.

Participating in the meeting, G. Muthu Meenal, Project Director, DRDA, said special attention had to be given at Uthiramerur, Madurantakam, Kattankolathur, Kudrathur, Chengalpattu, and Pallavaram areas from where many cases had been reported. The officials were directed to ensure that fogging was done in order to eradicate adult mosquitoes.
