Attack on Tirupattur school campus, Tamil Nadu's Vellore district

It was the last period before lunch break on Monday. Loud screams silenced the muted chatter that typically marks class hours at this government-aided school in Tirupattur. As the teachers rushed towards where the sound was coming from, they found the school’s headmaster, R. Babu, lying in a pool of blood on a corridor, outside a classroom. As he lay bleeding, Mr. Babu explained that a student had stabbed him and run away. The reason? Mr. Babu said he had asked the Class XI student why he was not in class.

Some of the school staff rushed Mr. Babu to the Government Hospital nearby.

A police officer said that five students stayed back in classroom though they were asked to come and study in front of the headmaster’s office. “He went up and questioned them. Four of the students ran down, while one boy pulled out a knife and stabbed him. He reportedly abused the headmaster saying he was pestering them to study, before stabbing him,” said the police officer.

A teacher said that the boy did not use the stairs to escape from the school campus but jumped over the adjacent buildings. The teen assailant who had attacked Mr. Babu was secured by the police in the evening.

Mr. Babu had suffered injuries on the right side of the abdomen and left side of the head. “He required surgery in the abdomen. However, his family and school staff wanted to shift him to a private facility. We referred him to a private hospital in Vellore,” a source at the hospital said.
