The city police have decided not to register a case against actor Kamal Haasan on a complaint lodged by an activist, who accused him of spreading misinformation and sought initiation of criminal defamation proceedings against him, following his tweet regarding nilavembu kudineer , a herbal mixture being promoted by the State government for preventing dengue.

On Thursday, Mr. Haasan posted a tweet asking people associated with his movement not to distribute nilavembu kudineer till its safety and efficacy were proved by conclusive research. Alleging that the tweet was defamatory in nature and was misleading the public, G. Devarajan of Sembium, who claimed to be a social activist, lodged a complaint with the city police against the actor.

Before acting on the complaint, the Central Crime Branch summoned the complainant to record his statement along with evidence to substantiate his claims.

Mr. Devarajan on Saturday appeared before an Inspector of Police of the Cyber Wing, gave his statement and submitted the tweet in question.

“We have gone through the complaint and found [that] nothing [in the tweet] is defamatory,” said a senior police official.
