Gruel being distributed to jobless fireworks workers in Chellamanaickkenpatti on Saturday.

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) on Saturday opened 38 gruel centres to distribute gruel to the family members of 8 lakh employees who have been left jobless following closure of fireworks units after the Supreme Court banned making of joined firecrackers and Barium Nitrate in making of crackers.

With 1,070 fireworks units remaining closed since November 13, the workers have lost their livelihood for more than 65 days. The gruel centres have been opened to bring to the attention of the State and Centre the plight of workers and their family. The CITU has planned to start a total of 100 gruel centres in the district in the next couple of days.

“We will plan further course of action on January 24,” CITU district secretary, P. N. Deva, said.

The workers have also urged the State government to pay compensation to jobless workers.
