Child workers rescued

A team of officials rescued a couple of child workers from two different two-wheeler workshops at Vinayagapuram area recently.

A team of officials from the Labour Department along with police men, staff of the National Child Labour Project, and Childline conducted surprise check in automobile workshops and other workplaces in Salem city, Omalur, Attur, Vinayagapuram, Narasingapuram recently.

The team members spotted two young boys employed as assistants in two different workshops in Vinayagapuram and rescued both of them. They were handed over the Child Welfare Committee personnel.

The labour department officials registered cases under the Child Labour (Prevention and Regulation) Amendment Act 2016 against both the concerns.

In a statement issued here on Friday, S. Shenbagaraman, Labour Inspector, stated that children below 14 years should not be employed in shops, business establishments, and hotels. The government has also slapped a ban on employing youths below 18 years in disastrous units.

The concerns employing child workers will be slapped a fine ranging between ₹ 20,000 and ₹ 50,000. They will be convicted for a period ranging between six months and two years.

The release called upon the local people and the entrepreneurs to desist from employing child workers and help Salem achieve the distinction of child labour-free district.
