Child marriage stopped in Namakkal

The marriage of a 17-year-old girl with a 26-year-old man that was scheduled to take place on Monday was stopped by the officials here.

Childline 1098 received information about the scheduled marriage and verified the details of the girl on early Monday.

After confirming that the girl’s age was less than 18 years, they informed the police and revenue officials. They rushed to the temple to find that the marriage was scheduled to take place at 7.30 a.m.

The groom, who is a labourer and is a relative of the girl.

Their parents were taken to the Block Development Office and a written statement was received from them that marriage would not be performed till she completed 18 years.

The girl’s parents were asked to produce her before the Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday.

Officials said that the Class XI student was regular to school and the marriage was planned during the holiday.
