Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to take steps to enhance the quota of Hajj pilgrims for Tamil Nadu this year.

She stated the Tamil Nadu State Hajj Committee had received about 12,100 applications this year. The Hajj Committee of India, Mumbai, had allotted only 2,863 seats.

Last year, initially 3,049 seats were allotted against more than 10,000 applicants. After the release of additional quota and government’s discretionary quota, 4,084 persons were able to perform the pilgrimage. The quota for Tamil Nadu for this year was an all-time low. She requested the Prime Minister to enhance it.
