Accused of not disclosing foreign assets

Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram's wife Nalini, son Karti Chidambaram and daughter-in-law Srinidhi on Monday appeared before the chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) court at Egmore, in cases booked against them by the Income Tax Department under the Black Money Act for allegedly not disclosing their foreign assets.

On May 11, the Income Tax Department filed complaints/chargesheets against them before the CMM court, which is the designated special court for cases under Section 50 of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015.

The chargesheets alleged that they failed to disclose investments to the tax authority, in violation of the black money law. Chief metropolitan magistrate S. Malarvizhi took cognisance of the complaints against them and issued summons for their appearance in court.

Complying with the summons, Ms. Nalini, Mr. Karti and Dr. Srinidhi appeared before the CMM on Monday. Former Deputy Mayor Karate R. Thiagarajan and other supporters accompanied them to the court.

They were issued with copies of complaints/charge sheets filed by the Income Tax Department. The court adjourned the matter to July 23 for further hearing.
