A family from Chromepet in Chennai that was headed to the pilgrimage centre of Mantralayam was among those who were trapped in the air-conditioned coach in which a fire broke out in Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Saturday.

The family of N. Natesh, manager of a city branch of a private bank, including his wife Vijita and their five-year-old daughter Tanushree and other relatives were travelling in the train.

According to reports from the accident site, the fire broke out near the seats which were allotted to the family. While there was no official word of confirmation from South Central Railway on the nature of injuries to passengers from Chennai, a relative of Mr. Natesh, when contacted over phone by The Hindu on Saturday evening, said the family was safe, before disconnecting the call.

Meanwhile, reports from Bangalore said Tanushree was being treated at a hospital for burns.
