Chengam traders down shutters

May 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

Shops in Chengam town remained closed on Wednesday protesting against loading / unloading workers.

Following a disagreement on wages and delay in unloading, a shop keeper in Chengam attempted to unload a consignment from lorry using their shop workers on Tuesday. Dr. Ambedkar Loading/Unloading Workers Union protested against this. Heated arguments ended in a clash. Immediately traders closed the doors and staged a road roko.

The Chengam Tahsildar held talks with the traders but he could not convince them to give up the protest.

They decided to form another loading / unloading workers union and decided not to engage members of Dr.Ambedkar Loading / Unloading Workers Union.

As a result, the workers staged a road roko separately.

As decided by the traders, a majority of the shops remained closed on Wednesday.
