Check quality of construction

May 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST

We now see a spate of construction activities on the streets surrounding the Srirangam temple. Those who are empowered to give building permits should study the structural stability of the buildings. Corrupt practices should not be allowed to erode the very foundations of these structures.

Develop picnic spots

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation and Tamil Nadu Tourism Department can go in for joint development of Mukkombu and Kallanai. The two places should be provided with more children play area and space for elders to sit and relax. Artificial fountains, falls, and other entertainment avenues could be created with private participation.

Build a bridge at

Needamangalam

There are four railway level-crossings besides the one at Needamangalam railway station on the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur highway causing undue traffic congestion. As the highway runs across the Needamangalam railway station, a bridge here will be of great relief to the road users.

At most level-crossings, pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders do not stop when the gate is closed and try to sneak in. The gates should be a complete barrier across the entire width of the railway crossing to prevent accidents.

Loans misused

This refers to the report, “Perplexities of farm loan waiver (April 30)”. The denial of farm loan waiver scheme announced by the Andhra Pradesh government to many deserving farmers should serve as an eye-opener to the policy makers and the public sector banks. The denial of farm loan waiver to farmers who availed gold loans based on self-declaration for cultivation exposes the irregularities committed by PSBs in the absence of credible regulation from the RBI.

Almost all public sector banks grant agriculture gold loans to the general public. Everyone is getting the benefits meant for agriculture loans. Such a glaring loophole was instrumental in non-farmers reaping the benefits out of the debt waiver scheme announced by the United Progressive Alliance government. Public money should not be splurged to benefit the affluent sections at the cost of poor farmers. I request the government and the RBI to take steps to stop misuse of government benefits aimed at ameliorating the lot of our farmers.

Tiruchi can be

second capital

Tiruchi is situated at the heart of Tamil Nadu and one can reach the city within five to six hours from any part of Tamil Nadu. So, it deserves the status of “second capital” of Tamil Nadu as mooted by the former Chief Minister late M.G. Ramachendran. By making Tiruchi the second capital, the ever increasing congestion in Chennai can be reduced to a great extent. An international airport is already there in Tiruchi. Apart from this, the city has a host of educational institutions and tourist attractions around.

Ban plastics

The ban on manufacture, stocking, and sale of plastic bags less than thickness of 40 microns by the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation will hardly make any difference to the plastics menace in the city if the experience is any indicator. The authorities have been found wanting in taking action against offenders despite repeated representations from social and environmental activists. Many big shops selling fruits and vegetables thrust plastic carry bags in the hands of their customers. The Uyyakkondan canal and the Thirumanchana Cauvery provide telltale evidences of pollution caused by plastics. The need of the hour is prompt action against all offenders.

Shift post office

back to Thennur

The Thennur post office was functioning at Shastri Road, which is in Thennur area. A year ago this post office was shifted and functioning just behind the head post office near Ottakadai area. At the time of shifting, the board at the old location informed people that the Thennur post office had been shifted temporarily. However, it has been more than a year now and the residents of Thennur are put to difficulty for travelling up to the new location. Residents who have opened MIS account with this post office are finding it difficult to operate their account as they need to travel once every month to get their monthly income. The Department of Posts should look for an accommodation for this post office in Thennur area.

ACs in cinemas

not switched on

Cinemas in Tiruchi are capitalising on the craze for films among fans. Cinema halls sell tickets at huge prices whenever new movies are released. They do not provide matching comfort. Some cinemas do not run the air conditioners. With only few fans available, cine-goers are put to inconvenience. The district administration must do surprise checks and ensure adequate amenities are available for the comfort of the film buffs

Milch animals

given oxytocin

The practice of injecting oxytocin drug on cattle by some owners is prevalent in the district. The drug is injected into the udder of buffalos to extract milk. The drug affects the reproductive system of the animals and regular consumption of milk from oxytocin injected animals could result in hormonal imbalance. I request the Tiruchirappalli District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union to take action against the practice.

Discoloured water

Many parts of Tiruchi get discoloured water. The previous Corporation Commissioner had assured people that it would be sorted out within two months. Now the officials say the problem would be sorted out within six months. How long people would have to tolerate with this problem?

Road build-up

Whenever Tiruchi City Corporation builds a road, the level of the road is raised by a few inches. Over a period of time, the road grows taller than the floor level of the houses. Many old buildings in Ramalinga Nagar are below the road level and so is the case in Thillai Nagar. Will the corporation look into this?
