Check dam commissioned in Dharapuram

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - Tirupur:

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday commissioned a check dam constructed across River Amaravathi stretch passing through Dharapuram through video conferencing.

The project was executed at an outlay of Rs 7.6 crore.

Public Works Department (Water Resource Organisation) officials told The Hindu that the 120-metre dam with a height of 1.8 metres, would be able to impound seven million cubic feet of water and the water thus stored would be used to cater to the drinking purposes of residents in Dharapuram and Kundadam areas. The officials clarified that the construction of the check dam would not affect the irrigation potential of the farmers in the downstream.

“We have provided openings at the bottom portion of the check dam,” said the officials.
