Pledging support to Palestinians, the Ramanathapuram district unit of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) on Tuesday staged a protest here against Israel for its offensive against Gaza and killing of innocent people.
A large number of men, women and children lined up in front of the government bus depot and shouted slogans against Israel and condemned the United Nations and some countries for their ‘stoic silence’ against the United States for its support to Israel.
The protesters waved placards denouncing Israel and wanting New Delhi to sever diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv. They chanted slogans such as “stop war against children” and “Save Gaza and free Palestine” in the more than hour-long agitation.
‘Israel’s days are numbered’Displaying pictures of bodies of women and children killed in air attacks and children desperately seeking help, the protesters warned that the ‘days of Israel are numbered.’
The pounding continued even during the holy month of Ramalan, but the UN and many countries remained silent, they said.
Addressing the protesters, TNTJ State high-level committee member Mohamed Altafi said Israel, after launching the attack on July 8, continued the offensive for 35 days and killed more than 2,000 people, including 1,000 hapless women and children. It was a matter of regret that India, the biggest democratic country in the world, had not come forward to condemn Israel. After many protests and disruptions, Parliament debated the Gaza violence, but refrained from adopting a resolution condemning Israel, he pointed out.
The protest was led by TNTJ district president Sulaiman and secretary Nazrudheen.
