Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan said here on Saturday that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre would soon file an affidavit in Supreme Court to get the nod for Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project.

All out efforts would be made to implement the project, which would certainly enhance economic conditions of the country, the Minister told mediapersons after launching the Maritime Training Institute at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin.

The project would be a major boon to people of Tamil Nadu and would cater to needs of those seeking employment, he said.

Responding to a query on fishermen’s objection to the Sethu project, the Minister said the Centre had been clearly explaining about the project and added that the UPA government was extending livelihood support in the interest of fisher folks in many ways. He also replied that the slump in rupee value against dollar affected not only fortunes of the shipping industry but also many spheres of trade.
