The gutkha scam in Tamil Nadu

‘CBI should investigate sexual harassment charge against IGP’

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran on Sunday called for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into a sexual harassment allegation against an Inspector General of Police, since the accused was serving in the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC).

Alleging that the DVAC would hesitate to investigate the case properly, Mr. Dhinakaran said the probe should be led by a CBI officer who was not a native of Tamil Nadu to ensure neutrality and bring the culprit to book if the allegation was proved.

Noting that it had been a month since the complaint of sexual harassment was made by a woman IPS officer, and that the lack of action in the case may risk the possibility of the accused tampering with the evidence, Mr. Dhinakaran questioned the rationale behind transferring the complainant instead.

Recalling an incident during former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s regime, where a DGP (Law and Order) was removed soon after a sexual harassment allegation was levelled against him, he said, “This government is insulting a woman officer.”

‘Govt. hesitant to act’

Since the accused officer was currently investigating various sensitive cases, including the gutkha scam — allegedly involving a Minister and a top police officer — the State government was hesitating to take action against him, Mr. Dhinakaran alleged.

The Internal Complaints Committee had recommended a CB-CID probe into the case.
