A four-member CBI team from Chennai, led by an officer in the rank of DSP, searched the house of D. Indira, daughter of former Revenue Minister I. Periyasamy, here on Thursday in connection with the murder of a Madurai-based businessman, K. Jamal Mohamed.
The team spent more than five hours in her apartment on Round Road and interrogated her family members. It also reportedly searched for incriminating documents. A team of lawyers was present when the search took place. At 3.30 p.m., the CBI team left for Madurai.
The team members were tight-lipped about the search and interrogation.
The Madurai City police had arrested Ms. Indira and two of Mr. Periyasamy’s relatives in connection with the murder on September 24.
Members of the M. K. Allauddin Rowther Charitable Trust, in a memorandum submitted to the Madurai Collector, had sought a CBI probe, raising suspicion over the action taken by the Tallakulam police in the murder of its managing trustee Jamal Mohammad in a land deal case.
They alleged that the police had let off some of the accused after investigation and those who acted as middle men in the deal and also beneficiaries of the land deal, including Ms. Indira, Palanivelu and Uma Rani, were not arrested.
Police sources said that a property of the Trust measuring 20 cents was registered in the names of these beneficiaries. Later, conditional bail was granted to her by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
