Unidentified persons stole Rs. 4.40 lakh from a petrol outlet at Nakudi on Aranthangi – Kattumavadi highway on Sunday night.

Police said the culprits gained entry by breaking open the locks of a shutter of one of the rooms where the cash was kept in the draws of two steel tables. As a few workers of the pump were fast asleep in the adjoining room, the culprits had taken away both tables to an adjoining forest area and escaped after committing the offence.

A police dog and fingerprint experts were pressed into service. The Nakudi police have registered a case and are investigating.
