The Velankanni police have registered a case in connection with the installation of a statue of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabakaran at the Periyanayagiamman Temple in South Poiganallur in the district recently.
Police officials went to the temple and conducted inquiries. The statue was removed from the temple, which the villagers consecrated on June 4.
Police sources said a case was booked under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) on a complainant preferred by Saminathan, Village Administrative Officer of South Poigainallur.
The police named N. Manickam of the village as the accused for having disobeyed the order and installing Prabhakaran’s statue. Fifty-five-year-old Manickam is the branch secretary of the AIADMK’s Amma Peravai.
The sources said the villagers decided to construct the temple for Goddess Periyanayagiamman about six months ago and constituted a committee to be headed by Mr. Manickam and comprising a few other villagers.
Constructed on an area of around 1,000 square feet, the temple has idols of Ayyanar, Balavinayagar, Balamurugan, Balambikai, Saptha Kannigai, Irulappasamy, Paathalaveeran and Maadasamy.
A statue of Prabakaran attired in military uniform was installed on the shrine’s premises. The case is being investigated by the Velankanni police inspector.
