Case against Velmurugan, 32 others

October 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The Gangaikondan police registered a case against 33 cadres of Thamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi, including its founder T. Velmurugan, after the agitation organised by them led to lathi-charge by the police on Tuesday.

When the party cadres tried to lay a siege to the upcoming unit of Pepsi at SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre at Gangaikondan near here on Tuesday, the police detained the protestors, including Mr. Velmurugan. As some of them squatted on the busy Tirunelveli – Madurai National Highway to block traffic, the police forcibly removed them and it led to lathi-charge by the police in which 10 persons sustained bleeding injuries.

Subsequently, the police registered case under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of Indian Penal Code against the 33 persons.
