Bylaws of AIADMK ignored, says DMK

‘The poll panel should have taken into consideration opinion of general council’

Accusing the Election Commission of favouring the ruling dispensation in the two leaves symbol case, DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan on Thursday said the poll body had failed to take into account the bylaws and rules of the AIADMK before arriving at a conclusion.

“If the Election Commission takes a decision based on the support of elected representatives, it should not have frozen the symbol in the first place. It is nothing but politics. The Election Commission has taken advice from the BJP-led Centre before taking decisions,” he alleged.

Mr. Elangovan said while deciding on party symbol the Election Commission should always take into consideration the opinion of the general council members of the party. “When we had a similar dispute with Mr. Vaiko (MDMK leader), we convened the general council meeting in 1993 and proved that of the 800 general council members, Mr. Vaiko had the backing of only 150 members,” Mr. Elangovan said.

He said whether postponing the schedule for the Gujarat polls or conducting the R.K. Nagar bypoll after the intervention of the Madras High Court, the Election Commission had come across as a tool in the hands of the BJP at the Centre.

The former Minister Thangam Thennarasu said it would not pose any challenge politically to the DMK.
