To improve its mobile phone coverage and services, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Liimted, the Nilgiris, has evolved a plan to erect 30 more micro Base Transmission Stations (BTS) in various parts of the district, according to the Additional General Manager, BSNL, V. Shankar.

He told The Hindu that they would be in place by September. Pointing out that the number of towers now was 102 as against 63 in 2010, he said that the places covered included Korakundah and Erumadu in remote parts of the district. To a question, he said that in its efforts to bring new areas under its umbrella, the department is getting excellent cooperation from the people especially those residing in far flung areas. He promised that steps would be taken to improve the coverage in places like Lovedale.

Stating that 11towers in Udhagamandalam and seven in Coonoor have been erected to provide 3G services, he said that there was no proposal now to extend the services to other parts of the district. The number of BSNL cell phone subscribers in the district now was 1.30 lakh.
