Many parts of the district witnessed brisk sale of sugarcane, turmeric and colour powders and traders expressed the hope that the business would continue to be good in the next two days.
Apart from availability of these products in markets, small traders have come up with temporary shops along roadsides and in residential areas to cater to the needs of people.
A pair of sugarcane is being sold between Rs. 50 and Rs. 80 and the traders say that the price will increase on Thursday and Friday.
The good rainfall has contributed to the increase in sugarcane productivity, they add.
Business
Villagers will celebrate Pongal on Friday and hence the traders expect good business for the next two days.
The items are being sold in uzhavar sandhai, markets, near bus stands, at road junctions and in bus stops at many parts of the town and in villages.
The usually busy market area is overcrowded with people purchasing dhotis and saris at the last minute.
Many consumers say the price of all products have increased by 20 to 40 per cent when compared to the price during Pongal last year.
But the traditional festival needs to be celebrated with same fervour and hence they purchase the products, they add.
